Holiday Decoration Storage Hacks

Do you prefer to let Christmas linger in your home or do you embrace the New Year without looking back? Whichever camp you’re in, you’ll need to ‘undeck’ the halls at some point so here’s a few organizing ideas to make next Christmas a whole lot easier.
1. Take a photo
Before tearing down your holiday decor, take a photo of your favorite setups. This is a quick and efficient way to replicate the look next year!
2. Invest in some quality storage
Your decorations are likely going into the basement, the garage or the attic for the next 11 months so why does it matter how you store them? These areas tend to be susceptible to moisture, pests and temperature fluctuations, which can damage your holiday décor over time. Many of these pieces not only have sentimental value but some were probably expensive to make or purchase so it’s important to protect them properly. Clear plastic boxes, with locking lids work the best because they allow you see the items without opening the box.
3. Group items with their accessories
Extension cords, power bars, pumps for your inflatables, hangers for wreaths, clips for lights, etc. Keep these accessories with the items they’re needed for. Ornaments should be packed with or near the tree and dedicate a separate box for the Christmas village or train to simplify the set up.
4. Create an ‘open first' box
Preparing for the holidays doesn’t happen in a day so make sure the items you’ll need first are readily accessible. Advent calendars, cookbooks, outdoor lights and whatever else you might need in November should be grouped together and left at the top or front of your boxes for easy retrieval when you’re ready to start.
5. Separate string lights
Save time and your sanity next Christmas by wrapping lights loosely (to prevent damage) around cardboard rectangles with notches, plastic hangers, or dedicated storage spools. Secure ends with zip ties or tape and place in bins together
6. Repurpose egg cartons
Use clean egg cartons to separate and protect small items so that they don’t get lost or broken at the bottom of a storage bid. Label the carton and store at the top of the bin with related items.
7. Keep a ‘forgot it' box
At some point, we’ve all finished packing away our holiday decorations only to come across an item (or 2) sometimes weeks later that we forgot to take down. Keeping a "forgot it" box around in January is an easier solution than pulling out your stored boxes, and when you’re confident that all stragglers have been found, this box can be added to the rest.
Final thoughts
- Keep out any damaged items to be repaired before next Christmas – add these to the ‘forgot it’ box so they’re not lying around.
- If you want to replace those damaged items instead, January is a great time to search stores for clearance items.
- Label every box even if it’s clear!
- Designate a holiday storage space for everything to avoid forgetting some decor until midway through December.
- Getting organized now equals more time with family and friends next Christmas, and isn't that what the holidays are really about?
